NOTE: I’m talking about ice falling from the sky – not the group causing all the injustice, fear, death, etc. across the country.
We are in the middle of a major ice storm. I just got in from feeding and watering everyone. It’s already pretty rough out there. It’s mostly snow and sleet, but freezing rain and wind are coming. I expect it’s only going to get worse.
Three buckets of water are down – 10 more to go. I filled 10-five gallon buckets of water to use for flushing and livestock watering. All water that was in the barns was frozen this morning so, while we still have power, I filled two fresh ones – one for each barn. Our livestock guardian dog and two outside cats are fed. The dog stays with the boy goats and has a nice barn to bed down in. One of the cats stays with her. The other, a former feral cat, lives in the building where our freezers are. She’s got a heat lamp (that we use to keep the pipes from freezing). As long as we have power, she’s okay. Once we loose power she’ll need to come in the house.
In the other barn are five female goats ready to kid in the next week or two. I hope they hold on until after this is over.
We did a good job prepping yesterday. In addition to the 10 buckets filled, I filled five gallons worth of glass mason jars (normally used for milk) with water for drinking. We have a generator that we can use to power electronics and the coffee maker. We have gas logs, but not a lot of propane – they didn’t come to fill it. We called on Tuesday asking for a fill. We have two ancient kerosene heaters we can use in a pinch.
I made two loaves of bread yesterday as well as two pots of soup. We have plenty of cold cuts. I think if we can stay warm we’ll be okay.
The dog in this photo is Punky. It too was taken on my first photo shoot. It’s gone through numerous edits and I like this one the best. I may enter it in PPA (Professional Photographer’s Association) MIR (merit image review) next month. It was used for my qualification panel for The Guild.
Until later …
